Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize, National Portrait Gallery

Monday, 23 November 2009

The Taylor Wessing Prize has been running in conjunction with the NPG since 2005.  The aim is to 'encourage and cultivate new talent with a forward thinking and creative attitude'.  I was interested to see the gallery's interpretation of these ideas and to read the biographies of the exhibited photographers.

* Use of colour saturation to highlight key aspects of a picture
* Telling a visual story, encouraging the viewer to speculate to interpret what they see
* Creativity can be defined by choice of subject matter as well as use of photographic techniques

It was interesting to see that not all the artists had specific qualifications in photography, some had backgrounds in art, design and the media.
