Evan Baden: The Illuminati

Thursday, 7 January 2010

Last Saturday's Guardian Magazine (2nd Jan) featured a series of pictures by American photographer Evan Baden. The Illuminati seeks to highlight the paradoxical feelings of connection and isolation, freedom and being chained, which we experience today with our extensive use of electronic illuminated screens.  Baden focuses on young people growing up in a world in which being plugged in and linked up is just a part of everyday life, all they have ever known, and the way in which they identify themselves.

I've been thinking a lot recently about how we seem to spend so much time nowadays in front of brightly lit screens - computers, mobile phones, ipods, GPS - so Baden's collection really grabbed my attention.  There is something really intriguing about the 'silent, soft and heavenly blue glow' he achieves in his pictures.
