Simon Annand, V&A, London

Wednesday, 17 March 2010

British Photographer Simon Annand has worked in and around the theatre for more than 25 years. His current exhibition The Half at the Victoria & Albert Museum showcases a selection of shots of actors during the half hour before they go on stage.

Most of the pictures displayed are from the early to mid part of this decade, with just a few from the late 80s. I enjoyed trying to identify the subjects before checking the names below.

The sitters faces are all very expressive giving the viewer a glimpse of the different emotions experienced by an actor as s/he prepares to take to the stage. You also get a feel of the different approaches taken to undertaking concentrated, artistic work.

The majority of the photos are in black & white, but there are a few in colour, plus a short film showing Annand at work and further examples from this collection.

A
book of the exhibition is available.
