Shell Jar Project

Saturday, 21 April 2012

So as you know, I was blown away last month by the beauty of the Welsh coast and its stunning beaches.  Whilst walking the sands of Rhossili, we picked up quite a few shells, keepsakes of a lovely day, all shiny and salty smelling.

It got me thinking... I've picked up half a beachful of shells over the years from different parts of the world.  They are happily pocketed, but once home end up in a box or cupboard somewhere, never seeing the light of day again.  Mmm, I feel a project coming on...

Making a Shell Jar

Gather up all those seaside beauties from your drawers, cupboards and so on...

This box was collected from the Gulf of Mexico for my Grandma, and eventually passed back to me.

Pick yourself up a nice-looking storage jar.  This one's from IKEA.  Make sure it's clean and dry before you start.

Ok, we're ready!

I started by sorting the shells into different shapes and sizes.
Love this one, shame it was too big for the jar!

A bit of help from Mr DI at this point...

Pebbles and stones go in first so as not to crush the more delicate shells.

Then build up in layers...

Try to get the prettiest ones facing outwards so they can be easily seen.

The finished result.  Happily there's still a good bit of space for more!

  1. I don’t even know the way I finished up right here, however I assumed this publish was great. I do not realize who you are but definitely you are going to be a well-known blogger in case you are not already. Cheers!
