The Channel Islands in Pictures & Numbers

Sunday, 27 April 2014

We spent the Easter break in the Channel Islands. It was fabulous to get on the plane at Gatwick and touch down in Jersey just 30 minutes later ~ a far cry from our usual 15 hour journeys crossing the Atlantic!

It was our first time in this part of the UK, and we were in for a treat indeed. The islands are small and easy to get around, the pace of life is relaxed and people are friendly. We also ate some rather excellent food! If you're active like us, there are plenty of things to see and do, but if you prefer to kick back a bit then this is also a great choice.

Here's a quick tour in pictures and numbers of what we got up to...

// 3 islands ~ Jersey, Guernsey & Sark (more on Sark coming soon)

// 5 ferry crossings

// 3 castles

Mont Orgueil Castle (Jersey) / Elizabeth Castle (Jersey) / Castle Cornet (Guernsey)

// 2 causeways

La Corbière lighthouse / Elizabeth Castle (Jersey)

// 2 lighthouses

St Peter Port (Guernsey) / La Corbière (Jersey)

We walked over to La Corbière late in the afternoon and almost got washed away on the way back when the tide suddenly began to rise up over the causeway (see picture above). We ended up splashing our way through a good 6 inches of sea water ~ quite scary at the time, but a funny memory to look back on, that's for sure!

// 2 coastal runs

I'd never run on sand before, but I'm a definite convert!

// 1 interesting letterbox

The post boxes on Guernsey are blue (they're all red in mainland Britain). Looking in more detail at this one, we realised that it dates from the reign of Edward VII, which I don't think I've seen often, if at all, elsewhere in Britain.

// 0 seagull attacks, thankfully!

The Hungry Man burger bar, Rozel Bay, Jersey

The islands are a great place for a short break or a longer holiday. We recommend the following hotels and restaurants:

JerseyLa Haule Manor
Grand Jersey Hotel
The Boathouse

GuernseyThe Duke of Normandie Hotel
The Swan Inn
Red Grillhouse & Cocktail Bar
Le Petit Bistro

SarkStocks Hotel

We flew to Jersey with BA and rented a car though Avis.
