Finding balance, staying calm & grounded

Autumn often seems to be a time of change for me. After the 'back to school' feeling of September comes hunkering down time as winter approaches and thoughts turn to Christmas and moving towards a new year.

There's a lot going on in my life at the moment and there have been times over the last few weeks when I've felt it's all verged on spiralling wildly out of control. But I've hung on in there and I think I'm out the other side.

To stay sane I used a few ideas I've picked up over the last couple of years to help me take a step back from it all, breathe and remember that everything comes good, one way or another, in the end.

Here's what's worked for me:
  • Make your favourite drink and find a quiet, cosy spot where you won't be disturbed for a little while

  • Think about how you're feeling and give yourself permission to accept this, without judgement ~ it is how it is. Notice the highs and lows

  • Try to identify the areas of your life which most need an injection of balance. Are you burning the candle at both ends? Spending too much time in the office? Have you stopped reading/listening to music/watching your favourite show? Are you exercising? When was the last time you spent quality moments with your significant other?

  • Get out your notebook/tablet and jot down a few ideas for regaining equilibrium in your key areas. Be specific ~ what needs to change, how and when? Consider what you may have done in the past to pull yourself back into shape ~ what worked well?

  • Connect with people you feel supported by. When under stress it's easy to close yourself down to others, when in reality the human touch can help to gentle ease you back to the place you want to be

  • Be kind to yourself. When you've been riding an emotional rollercoaster it's bound to take a while to come back to land. If you're tired, sleep. If you're hungry, eat. Allow yourself time to absorb what's going on around you and settle back into yourself

Just a few more days and then we're heading off for some sunshine and culture in Spain (did I mention that already?!) and that really will be the best medicine!
