Brasil: The Best Bits

Sunday, 24 January 2016

It's been a bit of a while I know! A new job and lots of commitments in the run up to Christmas meant that I didn't have as much time as I would've liked to get out and about with the camera or post here on the blog.

However... we spent a fantastic three weeks in Brasil over Christmas & the New Year, where I took plenty of pictures.

Brasil is a vast country & we saw but a few small parts of it. But what we did see was great. So for my first post of 2016, here are some of the best bits from our trip...

~ Beaches ~

You can't go to Brasil & not spend time on the beach ~ it's non-negotiable! Rio is a fabulous mix of city buzz & relaxed beach life. We stayed in Ipanema & were lucky enough to have hotel rooms facing the ocean.

Further up the coast we stayed in Buzios, a fishing village made famous by Brigitte Bardot, who visited the area in the 1960s. We learnt to surf in the (surprisingly cold) sea here, which was a lot of fun, although I think I must have swallowed a few bucketfulls of salt water in the process!

~ Architecture ~

The name Oscar Niemeyer is synonymous with Brasil & throughout our trip we saw why. Niemeyer was a prolific designer & is considered to be one of the keys figures in the development of modern architecture. His most well-known project is of course Brasilia, the purpose-built city which became Brasil's new capital in 1960. We spent a few days there, coming to know his work pretty well by the time we left.

~ New Friends ~

Of course I couldn't visit a new country without an animal fix. Family we visited during our trip kindly obliged!

Legendary in Rio of course! The top floor of our hotel was a amazing view point. People stay on the beach & in the sea way after sunset, when the beaches are floodlit.

~ New Year's Eve on Copacabana Beach ~

One of the coolest NYE's I've spent for ages! Sitting in deckchairs on the beach, capirinhas in hands, then at midnight we were treated to 16 minutes of incredible fireworks (for 2016). But it didn't stop there: down on the shoreline we joined most of the population of Rio, jumping over 7 waves & making 7 wishes for the new year, then throwing flowers into the sea.

~ Icons ~

The biggest in Rio is of course the statue of Christ the Redeemer at the top of Corcovado mountain, famous the world over and visible from all over the city. We went up early to beat the crowds & the heat, and were rewarded with gorgeous blue skies and clear views all over Rio.

~Taking Flight ~

On our last day in Rio, the day before my birthday, we took a helicopter trip over the city. It was one of the best things I've ever done: clear skies, amazing views & a really smooth ride. Leaving it to the last day was so nice as we could spot all the places we'd been to during our stay.

So those are just a few of the lovely things we did in Brasil. But do you know the best thing about our trip? Experiencing all these wonderful things with my family. We haven't spent that amount of time together for so many years & this trip is one I'm sure we'll all remember for the rest of our lives.
